【Text】
I was being tested for a driving licence for the third time. I had been asked to drive in heavy traffic and had
done so successfully. After having been instructed to drive out of town, I began to acquire confidence. Sure that I
had passed, I was almost beginning to enjoy my test. The examiner must have been pleased with my performance,
for he smiled and said, 'Just one more thing, Mr. Eames. Let us suppose that a child suddenly crosses the road in
front of you. As soon as I tap on the window, you must stop within five feet.' I continued driving and after some
time, the examiner tapped loudly, Though the sound could be heard clearly, it took me a long time to react. I
suddenly pressed the brake pedal and we were both thrown forward. The examiner looked at me sadly. 'Mr.
Eames,' he said, in a mournful voice, 'you have just killed that child!'

【Key structures】
被動(dòng)語(yǔ)態(tài)
被動(dòng)語(yǔ)態(tài)可以用于“介詞+動(dòng)名詞”結(jié)構(gòu)中，在英語(yǔ)中是很正式的用法，一般不用于口語(yǔ)。“介詞（after，
before，on）+動(dòng)名詞”這個(gè)結(jié)構(gòu)通常相當(dāng)于一個(gè)時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)從句。如果兩個(gè)動(dòng)作中有一個(gè)在另一個(gè)開始之前
已經(jīng)完成，則可以用“after +動(dòng)名詞的完成_____式”表示第一個(gè)動(dòng)作；如果只表示先后順序，則可用“after/before
+動(dòng)名詞”結(jié)構(gòu)；“on +動(dòng)名詞”通常表示兩個(gè)動(dòng)作幾乎同時(shí)發(fā)生：
The man called the police after being robbed.
He killed a child before being arrested.
On/After being told that her mother was seriously ill, she hurried back to England.
被動(dòng)語(yǔ)態(tài)用于want 后面的不定式中時(shí)，to be 可以省略，want 后跟被動(dòng)語(yǔ)態(tài)時(shí)往往表示希望別人完成
所說(shuō)的動(dòng)作：
I want the luggage fetched from the hotel this afternoon.
被動(dòng)語(yǔ)態(tài)還可用于過(guò)去進(jìn)行時(shí)，以強(qiáng)調(diào)動(dòng)作的持續(xù)性：
I was being asked about the film all day yesterday.

Enjoy, Entertain and Amuse

I enjoy swimming in summer.
We’re really enjoying ourselves.
entertain vt. 款待，招待，請(qǐng)客；使……快樂(lè)，給……娛樂(lè)（=amuse）
We often entertain friends at weekends.
Uncle Sam entertains/amuses the children for hours at a time.
